I started writing this book in 2015, when I was working as an engineering manager on the AdWords team. The idea for the book came up during one of our weekly meetings where we talked about what new engineers should learn after they finished their initial training. We wanted them to have some practical experience before they were thrown into building production services, but it seemed like there wasn’t enough time or resources to give them that experience within Google
