I was born in 1982 in New York City, but grew up mostly outside of Philadelphia. My parents were both computer scientists who worked for Bell Labs (later Lucent Technologies). They met while working on Unix systems programming tools; my dad wrote vi , my mom helped design the X11 window system. They both left Bell Labs around 1993 to start their own consulting company, which they ran until retiring in 2005. I have one younger brother who is also a programmer; he works at Facebook .

In high school I was pretty much exactly like every other nerd: played Dungeons & Dragons , read science fiction novels, went to Star Trek conventions with friends..
