I’ve been wanting to read this book since I first heard about it on NPR several years ago. It was finally available at my library so I picked it up right away. The author is an academic historian with a focus on early America (colonial through Reconstruction). He’s also written extensively on slavery and race relations in the U.S., which makes him well-suited to write this volume (which focuses primarily on that topic).
