The only thing I can think of to explain this is that it’s an artifact from how they’re made. A single-sided tailed version would be easier to make in some ways (no need for extra material), but you’d have to use more fabric because there’s no way to get rid of excess material around the waist without making a seam on both sides. A double sided tailed version would take more time and effort, but you wouldn’t have any waste at all
