I can’t help but feel like this is an attempt to make it more “hip and cool”, which I think is a mistake. It used to be that if you wanted to know what was going on in the world, you would read The Economist or watch CNN. Nowadays, people are getting their news from Facebook and Twitter (and sometimes Reddit). So why does The Economist have such a dated design? Why do they insist on using Helvetica when most other publications use something else? And why do they still use serifs for body copy?
