I grew up in rural Minnesota, where my dad was an electrical engineer for 3M. He worked on lots of cool stuff like magnetic recording tapes and Scotchgard fabric protector (which is actually pretty cool). My mom taught math to middle schoolers before she retired. Both of them are still alive and well! They were always encouraging me to learn new things, which helped me get into programming early: I started with BASIC when I was about 10 years old, then moved onto Pascal when I was 12 or 13. In high school I took AP Computer Science as a junior and senior; it was really fun because we got to use Java 1
