You cant just read a book and expect to be able to write code that works. The best way to learn how to program is by writing programs, preferably with the help of someone who knows what they are doing.
I have been programming for about 10 years now, but I still feel like there are many things I dont know or understand well enough yet. There are also many things that I do know but dont always apply in practice because it doesnt make sense at the time (e.g., it would take too long/be too complicated/etc
